Here is the list of the main bottle sizes:
Melchisedech (or Midas): 30 litres (40 bottles)
Primate: 27 litres (36 bottles)
Solomon: 18 litres (24 bottles). Named Melchior in the Bordeaux region.
Nebuchadnezzar: 15 litres (20 bottles)
Balthazar: 12 litres (16 bottles)
Salmanazar: 9 litres (12 bottles)
Mathusalem: 6 litres (8 bottles). Named Imperial in the Bordeaux region.
Jeroboam: 3 litres (4 bottles). In Bordeaux, a 3-litre bottle is named « Double Magnum » and the Jeroboam contains 5 litres.
Magnum: 1.5 litres (2 bottles)
Bottle: 75cl
Half bottle: 37.5cl
While some names have biblical origins, other bottle sizes are named after honorific titles. Imperial refers to the title of Emperor used in Roman times to designate the commander of an army. The Primate is a Catholic reference to the honorary title of a bishop at the head of an archdiocese.
