Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Floramundi 2023 Donnafugata
Tasting
Color
The wine displays a bright ruby robe with violet highlights, a hue that reflects both its youth and the color contribution of Nero d'Avola.
Nose
The nose opens on an intensely fruity and floral bouquet, where cherry and plum mingle with fresh floral tones, rounded out by subtle balsamic and spicy nuances.
Palate
On the palate, the wine shows a soft, approachable texture, carried by fine-grained tannins that bring balance and ease to the overall profile.
Food and wine pairings
This Floramundi pairs naturally with grilled meats and, in a more original combination, with rich fish such as red tuna.
Serving and cellaring
Floramundi 2023 can be served slightly chilled. Based on the estate's own guidance regarding this wine's aging potential, it is best enjoyed until 2027 approximately.
A Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG Shaped by Donnafugata in Southeastern Sicily
The Estate
Donnafugata was founded in 1983 in Sicily by Giacomo Rallo and his wife Gabriella Anca Rallo, building on the Rallo family's winemaking roots that trace back to 1851 in Marsala. Today the estate is led by their children, José and Antonio Rallo, who continue to shape its identity across five distinct Sicilian terroirs. Donnafugata farms 459 hectares of vineyards and has built a strong reputation for combining native grape varieties with a structured sustainability strategy, supported by international certifications and measurable environmental indicators.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this wine are grown in the Vittoria area of southeastern Sicily, within the Cerasuolo di Vittoria appellation, on vineyards planted at altitudes ranging from about 120 to 240 meters above sea level. The soils are predominantly sandy, at times resting on layers of calcareous tuff or medium-textured ground, a combination that favors aromatic finesse alongside tannic structure. The vines also benefit from sea breezes and moderate diurnal temperature shifts that help preserve natural acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
Floramundi 2023 ferments in stainless steel tanks, with skin maceration carried out at controlled temperatures to preserve fruit purity. Malolactic fermentation follows, softening the wine's acidity and adding roundness. Aging takes place entirely in tank, without contact with wood, for about nine months, followed by a minimum of fifteen months of bottle refinement before release, a process designed to preserve the wine's bright fruit and floral character.
Grape Varieties
This wine is crafted from Nero d'Avola and Frappato, the two native varieties required by the Cerasuolo di Vittoria appellation. Nero d'Avola, present in the majority share as called for by the appellation's rules, contributes structure and color, while Frappato lends floral aromatics and freshness to the blend.
