Description
Tasting Notes and Recommendations for the Orin Swift Abstract 2024
Tasting
Color
Abstract 2024 shows a deep violet, almost black core with a bright mauve rim in the glass.
Nose
The nose opens on ripe blueberry compote, pluot, and raspberry, layered with fresh lavender and a touch of musk, while mocha and caramel notes emerge from the wine's time in oak.
Palate
This wine arrives massive on entry, carrying dark briar fruit, rhubarb, thyme, and Bing cherry through a richly textured mid-palate. Soft, well-integrated tannins lead into a long finish marked by sweet licorice and boysenberry.
Food and wine pairings
This Orin Swift Abstract pairs well with grilled meats, gourmet burgers topped with rich cheese, and roasted lamb seasoned with garlic and herbs. It also holds up nicely alongside aged cheeses, making it a versatile companion for hearty, flavorful dishes.
Serving and cellaring
For those opening Abstract 2024 soon after purchase, decanting for at least three hours is recommended to let the wine fully open up. This Abstract cuvée from Orin Swift can also be given a few years in the cellar to let its oak-driven notes settle further.
Other characteristics
Abstract 2024 reaches an alcohol level of 15.4%, though some retailers list it slightly lower at 15.3%, a small variation likely tied to labeling rounding. The wine received a score of 89 points from Wine Spectator, whose note points to concentrated blackberry and boysenberry fruit, balanced freshness, and a slightly chewy, peppery finish.
A Structured California Red Blend from Orin Swift
The Estate
Founded in 1998 by Dave Phinney, Orin Swift Cellars is based in St. Helena, in the heart of California's Napa Valley. Rather than operating as a traditional single-vineyard estate, Orin Swift built its identity as a premium wine brand, sourcing fruit from across California and pairing each release with bold imagery and memorable names. Since 2016, the brand has been owned by E. & J. Gallo Winery, with Dave Phinney remaining as founder and creative force behind every bottle. Orin Swift is recognized today within Gallo's luxury wine portfolio, carrying forward the same inventive spirit that built its reputation.
The Vineyard
The grapes behind Abstract are drawn from several counties across Northern California, including Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino, reflecting Orin Swift's broader approach of sourcing fruit from sought-after vineyard sites throughout the state. Rather than being tied to a single appellation, Abstract carries the California appellation, allowing the winemaking team to select small lots of high-quality fruit from multiple growing regions each vintage.
Winemaking and aging
Abstract 2024 is crafted from a blend of grenache, petite sirah, and syrah. The wine spent eight months aging in French oak barrels, 29% of them new, a relatively short aging period intended to add texture and gentle spice while preserving the freshness of the fruit.
Grape Varieties
Abstract 2024 is built around grenache, petite sirah, and syrah. While Orin Swift's official materials do not disclose exact percentages, some retailers indicate a blend leaning primarily on petite sirah, complemented by grenache and a smaller portion of syrah.
