Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2019 by Lucien Le Moine
Tasting
Color
This red wine reveals a deep, intense hue, characteristic of the great vintages produced from this grand cru terroir.
Nose
The nose opens on aromas of black fruit, layered with floral notes and a touch of spice, reflecting the depth typically found in this cuvée.
Palate
The palate is supported by a firm mineral backbone and a dense yet finely woven tannic structure, carrying through to a remarkably long finish. The flavors come across as pure and intensely delineated, with excellent volume and a finish that is both muscular and stony, extending well after the wine has been swallowed. The wine already shows notable complexity and is expected to gain further depth with time in the cellar.
Serving and cellaring
Because of the natural CO2 preserved through gravity bottling and the absence of racking, it is recommended to double-decant the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2019 before serving, allowing the wine to open fully. This grand cru has an aging potential extending beyond 2033.
A Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Shaped by Long Aging in Beaune
The Estate
Founded in 1999 in Beaune, in the heart of Burgundy, Lucien Le Moine is a small négociant-éleveur run today by husband-and-wife team Mounir Saouma and Rotem Brakin. Rather than owning vineyards, the house selects juice and young wines from top premier cru and grand cru parcels across the Côte d'Or, which are then aged in its own cellars in Beaune. Working across close to forty different crus in very limited volumes, Lucien Le Moine has built its identity on long aging and a hands-on approach to blending wines sourced from carefully selected parcels.
The Vineyard
The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze grand cru appellation lies within the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits, on one of Burgundy's oldest recognized clos, with roots dating back to the Middle Ages. Its clay-limestone soils and predominantly east-facing exposure contribute to a marked minerality and a firm, elegant tannic structure. As a négociant-éleveur, Lucien Le Moine does not own vines within this grand cru but sources its lots through selected parcels cultivated by partner growers, then blends and ages the wine under its own signature.
Winemaking and Aging
The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2019 follows the winemaking approach typical of Lucien Le Moine: slow fermentation carried out in particularly cold cellars, followed by an extended aging period of close to two years on full lees, in new oak barrels crafted from Jupilles forest wood. No sulfur is added during aging, with only limited additions at pressing and at bottling. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, and bottling is carried out by gravity, preserving the natural CO2 produced during fermentation.
Grape Varieties
100% pinot noir.
