The Barbaresco DOCG in Piedmont is responsible for producing some of Italy's finest wines. Located in the same region as Barolo and producing wines from the same varietal, Nebbiolo, the Barbaresco vineyards are one third the size (640 hectares compared to Barolo's 1700). The soils here are lighter - both in color and weight. While the slopes are less favorably situated and yield grapes that mature earlier. However the wines are extremely elegant and require less oak aging.
