Description
Meo-Camuzet is one of the most celebrated Domaines in the Carte d’Or. With six Grand Crus and ten Premier Crus wines, the estate has an interesting history leading up to fame for its deliciously balanced and pure wines of Burgundy. Founder Etienne Camuzet, purchased 20 hectares of land at the top of Clos de Vougeot and worked with trusted sharecroppers to take care of his land while he worked in Paris as a politician. Etienne’s daughter inherited the estate after her father’s death but without any successors she passed the estate down to the next closest relative Jean Meo.
Meo-Camuzet was established in 1981 when Jean’s son Jean-Nicolas took over the estate after finishing business and oenology school. The first vintage under the Meo-Camuzet label was bottled in 1983. Jean-Nicolas looked to famed producers who were sharecropers on the estate land for guidance and advice. The famed Henri Jayer, who worked with the estate vines for over 40 years, mentored Jean-Nicolas before his retirement. Christian Faurois, son and nephew of historic tenant farmers on the Meo Camuzet property, also mentored Jean-Nicolas on growing vines thus igniting his passion for the vineyard.
Corton is the largest Grand Cru appellation in Burgundy. Located at the northern point of Cote de Beaune, the vineyards are limestone and marl rich soils creating rich, mineral driven, austere red wines. . The Les Perrieres is a single vineyard plot within Corton famed for their refined beauty. Perrieres refers to the pink, round stones in the soil creating a distinct sense of place in the wines from this vineyard. Known to be a bit less powerful than the other Corton vines, these grapes still have plenty of tannins and benefit with age. The Meo-Camuzet Corton Grand Cru "Les Perrieres 2015 is a multifaceted beauty. Sturdy, yet bright on the palate, the wine is complex with black fruit, black cherry, licorice, espresso and a smoky minerality. It has a bit of a savory touch paired with solid yet fine tannins and a terrific mineral backbone.
