Description
Verduno is a small town in Piedmont located in the most northern commune of Barolo. The grape variety Pelaverga is indigenous to this area of Piedmont and has long been what Verduno is best known for. The castle of Verduno was constructed in the early 1500's, and was purchased by the Burlotto family in 1909. The Burlotto family had been producing wines in this area since the 1800's. Gabriella Burlotto and Franco Bianco are the current heads of the estate where they have 5 hectares in Verduno as well as 5 more in Barbaresco. The vineyards in Verduno are planted to Pelaverga and Nebbiolo. This light bodied red is perfect for a warm spring day and should be drank slightly chilled. Notes of sour cherry, almond, and anise are framed by light tannins and a lively acidity. The word Basadone, in the local dialect, is the name for the poppies pictured on the label. Basadone also means “little kiss” and local tradition has it that Pelaverga is an aphrodisiac.
