Description
A Bordeaux Superieur with Succulent Fruit and a Long Finish
Founded in 1830 in the small Genissac hamlet of eastern Entre-deux-Mers, across the Dordogne from the appellation of Saint-Emilion, Chateau Peyfaures is an estate classified Bordeaux Superieur. The vines of the estate stretch their roots deep into clay-limestone soils and are cultivated with organic and biodynamic practices. The flagship grape at Chateau Peyfaures is Merlot, which is blended together with Cabernet Franc and a hint of Cabernet Sauvignon. The winemaking approach at Peyfaures is to return to the traditional Bordeaux way. The fruit is crushed gently in a traditional basket press. Spontaneous fermentation takes place with naturally-occurring yeasts only. This minimal intervention, plot-by-plot method really allows the vineyard terroir to shine through in the estate's wines. The proportion of oak and length of aging is adjusted to the characteristics of each vintage. The Chateau Peyfaures 2014 is the product of a vintage with an exceptionally long growing season, resulting in a wine with a deep complexity and layered aromas of fruit and earth. The blend is made up of 95% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels of which one-third new. In the glass, this Bordeaux red wine displays a dark reddish-purple color. Aromas of ripe cherries and baking spices reveal themselves after swirling the glass. On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied with a rich, mouth-coating texture and flavors of black fruit, cinnamon and licorice. The succulent fruity and linear acidity persist on a very long and silky-smooth finish.
