Pol Roger : Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 2006

An exceptional Champagne for those of great character

"There is only one answer to the defeat and that is victory," Sir Winston Churchill, to whom we owe this quote was particularly fond of Pol Roger House Champagne. According to him, the House has "the most delectable address in the world” to celebrate moments of glory and forget those of sorrow. In 1975, the House Pol Roger decided to pay tribute to this great character by creating the Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill that is produced only in great vintages. This Cuvee has always been the result of a carefully kept blend, Grands Crus from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill today reveals the strength of his personality after being patiently cellared in the House for 9 years.

This Champagne of character sports a deep golden yellow color. The nose reveals an aromatic palette of great richness with aromas of dried fruit, sweet almond and brioche notes. On the palate, freshness evolves towards round notes of of stewed fruit, dried fruit, and quince. The long and persistent finish ends with generous buttery and fruity notes.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
Made in the very best vintages, Pol Roger's white-golden colored 2006 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill offers a very clear, precise, ripe and complex bouquet with fruity and refreshingly chalky, nutty and brioche notes. Full-bodied and complex on the palate, the 2006 is supple, round and rich but also fine, elegant, fresh and well structured. It has a harmonious yet tight, persistent and very promising finish that puts this silky textured, Pinot-dominated cuvée (the exact blend is a closely guarded family secret) on the border of fatty richness. But the mousse gives so much freshness and finesse that everything seems lifted here. Though I have very limited experience with matured Champagnes from Pol Roger and namely Churchill, I suppose the 2006 will benefit a lot from further bottle aging. But don't get me wrong: the wine is already gorgeous. Tasted June 2018, disgorged in June 2017.
