Marks and reviews
For four generations, Domaine Joseph Drouhin has been a must-know reference among fine Burgundy wines. Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin, who was 22 years old at the time, the estate has expanded over the years and has reached its current size of 80 hectares. The vines spread over renowned appellations (Beaune, Bonnes-Mares, Chassagne-Montrachet, Clos Vougeot, Corton-Charlemagne, Grands-Echezeaux, Pouilly-Fuissé, etc.).
Since 1957, this family of precursors has advocated respect for the terroir and the environment both regarding the vineyard management and the production of their fine wines.
The red and white wines of Domaine Joseph Drouhin authentically express the mosaic and richness of the Burgundian terroirs. They are renowned for their elegance, their intense fruity aromas and their gourmet complexity.
This "Clos des Mouches" 2020 Blanc by Joseph Drouhin is a Beaune 1er cru wine made from grapes grown on a 6.82-hectare plot located in the southern part of the appellation.
This terroir, close to Pommard, takes its name from the old beehives, known at the time as "mouches à miel". In the 1920s, Maurice Drouhin gradually acquired this vineyard, which consisted of 41 plots of land divided between 8 owners.
The vines are 45 years old on average and are planted on clay-limestone soil, with stony soil in the upper part and marl-limestone in the heart of the vineyard. These soil types bestow the wine with a pleasant finesse.
Planted equally with red and white grapes, this plot of land has been farmed organically since 1990 and then biodynamically a few years later, producing some of the estate's most emblematic wines.
Vinification and ageing
Harvested and sorted by hand, the grapes are gently pressed. The juice from the last press is not selected in the making of this wine. The wine is racked into barrels after settling. The wine is aged for 12 to 15 months in French oak barrels (25% of which are new), dried for more than 3 years to contribute to the finesse of the wines.
Brilliant, with a beautiful pale yellow colour.
The complex nose gives off floral (white lilac, white rose) and fruity fragrances, as well as hazelnut and toasted almond. After a few years of ageing, the bouquet elegantly blends aromas of white truffle, citron, honey and nutmeg.
The lively, mineral and structured palate is seduced by this wine’s smoothness, its balance and its beautiful length.
For an optimal tasting, serve at 14°C.
This Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches 2020 White by Domaine Joseph Drouhin can lay down until 2050, enabling it to express its full aromatic richness.
