Description
Tasting Notes and Serving Recommendations for Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 Joseph Drouhin
Tasting
Color
The wine displays a bright, intense ruby robe, luminous and deeply colored, reflecting the ripeness reached by the pinot noir grapes in this vintage.
Nose
The nose opens with great complexity, combining black fruit aromas of blackberry, blueberry and black currant with floral notes of peony and violet, while hints of spice underline the quality of the tannins. These youthful notes sit alongside the more classic Bonnes-Mares register of morello cherry, wild cherry wood and raspberry, which with time tends to evolve toward truffle and musk.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and generous yet remains fresh, carried by silky, high-quality tannins. The structure and richness are well balanced, giving a wine that is both firm and supple, with a remarkably long finish.
Food and wine pairings
This Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru pairs beautifully with roasted or braised red meats, game, and poultry served with mushroom-based sauces. It also complements mature soft cheeses, making it a versatile companion for refined, savory dishes.
Serving and cellaring
Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 is best served at a temperature of 16–18°C. It can be enjoyed from around 2037 to 2042 for optimal drinking, with a cellaring potential extending to approximately 2052.
Other characteristics
This is a dry red wine, structured around silky tannins and a fresh, balanced profile, without any residual sweetness.
A Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Chambolle-Musigny, Full-Bodied Yet Fresh
The Estate
Joseph Drouhin was founded in 1880 in Beaune, Burgundy, when Joseph Drouhin took over a négociant business at the age of 22. Today the family-run house, now led by the fourth generation—Frédéric, Philippe, Véronique and Laurent—oversees roughly 100 hectares across more than 60 Burgundy appellations, including 14 Grand Crus and 20 Premier Crus, farmed organically and biodynamically. A fifth generation is already joining the business.
The Vineyard
The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru parcel farmed by Joseph Drouhin lies on the Chambolle-Musigny side of this grand cru, located between Chambertin and Musigny. The gently sloping site has light soil scattered with limestone pebbles, favoring good drainage and even ripening. The vines are planted at high density, encouraging root competition and deep soil penetration, and are cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles.
The Vintage
The 2022 growing season in Burgundy proved favorable to a complete ripening of the pinot noir grapes, resulting in vivid, deeply colored fruit. While detailed meteorological data is not disclosed, the resulting wines point to a warm year that nonetheless preserved natural freshness, avoiding the risk of overripeness often associated with hotter vintages.
Winemaking and aging
Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 was harvested entirely by hand in small perforated crates, with a portion of whole clusters—between 20% and 50% depending on the vintage—included in the blend. Fermentation and maceration took place over two to three weeks in small open vats using indigenous yeasts, with regular punching down and pump-overs. After a gentle vertical pressing, the wine was aged for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels from high-forest trees, with about 30% new wood, guided throughout by regular tastings.
Grape Varieties
100% pinot noir.
