Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches" 2022 by Joseph Drouhin
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a luminous yellow hue of great crystalline purity.
Nose
The nose exudes delicate aromas of white flowers, such as lilac and rose, intertwined with notes of white fruit. With aeration, the bouquet evolves toward touches of almond, toasted hazelnut and a subtle minerality reminiscent of white truffle.
Palate
Full-bodied and mineral, the palate seduces with its fleshy, satiny texture. It offers a remarkable balance between rich concentration and lively acidity, revealing hints of nutmeg, ginger and toasted bread, while retaining great tension and a lingering finish.
Food and Wine Pairing
This great white wine pairs beautifully with fresh seafood, oysters, or richer dishes such as roast poultry served with a cream and hazelnut sauce.
Serving and Cellaring
This Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches" 2022 reveals a superb profile even in its youth, yet possesses the aging potential to be cellared and enjoyed until around 2032.
The Elegance and Minerality of a Great White Wine from Beaune
The Estate
Founded in 1880, the House of Joseph Drouhin is a leading institution in Burgundy. At the helm of a vineyard spanning approximately 100 hectares from Chablis to the Mâconnais, the estate is now run by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin as president, alongside Véronique, Philippe and Laurent. A pioneer in environmental stewardship, the estate began its conversion to organic farming as early as 1988, followed by biodynamics in the 1990s, affirming its commitment to letting the authenticity of its terroirs express itself with as little intervention as possible.
The Vineyard
The legendary Clos des Mouches lies at the southern edge of the Beaune appellation, bordering Pommard. Maison Joseph Drouhin owns 14 hectares there, more than half of this historic clos. Facing east-southeast on the mid-slope, the vines benefit from ideal morning sunlight. The soils, farmed biodynamically, consist of rock and limestone in the upper section, and a blend of limestone and marl at the center, forcing the roots to dig deep to give the wine its finesse and mineral freshness.
The Vintage
The year 2022 stood out for its exceptional sunshine and particularly dry, warm climate, marking one of the hottest years since the turn of the last century. These favorable weather conditions kept vine diseases at bay and allowed the grapes to reach perfect physiological ripeness, with excellent concentration.
Winemaking and Aging
For this Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches" 2022, the grapes are hand-harvested into perforated crates. Gentle pneumatic pressing preserves the purity of the juice. After settling, the wine is transferred into oak barrels (20 to 25% new oak) for a slow fermentation at a cool temperature. Aging on the lees lasts 16 to 18 months, including malolactic fermentation in barrel, lending the wine complexity and texture.
