The elegance and structure of a wine from the Charmes-Chambertin appellation
The estate
Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin has established itself as an essential reference in Burgundy. This family estate, a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, now oversees a vast vineyard of 100 hectares spread across some of the region's finest terroirs. Currently led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin as chairman of the executive board, alongside his siblings Philippe, Véronique and Laurent, the estate continues an ancestral savoir-faire. Their philosophy aims to express the purest authenticity of each Climat through wines of great elegance.
The vineyard
Charmes-Chambertin is a renowned vineyard located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits. The vines benefit from an ideal east-facing exposure, on a slope offering perfect drainage. The terroir consists of a thin layer of soil combining clay, limestone and iron-rich minerals, resting on a bedrock of fractured rock. This distinctive geology, scattered with large pebbles, allows the roots to anchor deeply. The estate practices biodynamic viticulture here with a high planting density to enhance the expression of this terroir.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by particularly hot and dry weather conditions. After a mild winter and a scorching summer that encouraged early budbreak, the vines experienced water stress in early August. Fortunately, saving rains in mid-August helped revive the vegetative cycle. The two dry and windy weeks preceding the harvest ensured a perfect sanitary condition of the berries.
Winemaking and Aging
To produce this Charmes-Chambertin 2022, the grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted. The winemaking process incorporates 20 to 50% whole bunches. Fermentation, triggered by indigenous yeasts, and maceration take place over two to three weeks in small open vats, punctuated by traditional punching down and pumping over. After gentle vertical pressing, the wine is aged for sixteen to twenty months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, to refine its structure while respecting the identity of the terroir.
