Description
Tasting Notes and Characteristics of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 Domaine Leflaive
Tasting
Color
The wine shows an elegant lemon and lime hue, a pale, bright color still marked by youthful green tints that hint at the underlying freshness of the vintage.
Nose
The nose is precise and elegant, built on citrus and white currant notes, lime blossom and citronella, joined by ripe apricot, fresh bread, fresh herbs and white flowers. A touch of baking spice completes the aromatic picture, while the oak remains fully integrated and never dominates the fruit.
Palate
The palate is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with good concentration and racy acidity that keeps the whole structure in balance. A light youthful bitterness builds toward the back palate, giving way to a chalky, mineral finish that lingers with salivating notes of citrus and spice.
Food and wine pairings
This grand cru pairs beautifully with refined seafood such as lobster or langoustine served with citrus-butter or herb sauces, as well as firm white fish like monkfish or turbot prepared with mushroom-based sauces. It also matches elegantly with white meats and poultry served with creamy, mushroom-based preparations.
Serving and cellaring
The Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 shows a tight, reserved character in its youth, with racy acidity and a chalky finish that point to real potential for further development in the cellar.
Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru: A Fine Expression of Puligny-Montrachet Terroir
The Estate
Founded in 1905 by Joseph Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Leflaive is a family-run estate located in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. Today it covers close to 25 hectares, including some of the finest grand cru and premier cru climats of the commune, and is led by Brice de la Morandière, great-grandson of the founder. The estate has farmed biodynamically since the 1990s under Anne-Claude Leflaive and remains entirely independent and family-owned.
The Vineyard
The Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet parcel lies on the lower part of the Mont-Rachet slope, just below Bâtard-Montrachet, on clay-limestone soils that combine a tender surface layer with a limestone subsoil bringing minerality to the wine. The plot covers a little over one hectare and was planted in 1958 and 1959, giving old vines with deep root systems. The chardonnay vines of this Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet parcel are farmed according to biodynamic principles.
The Vintage
The 2020 growing season was notably early, with budbreak nearly three weeks ahead of average and harvest completed entirely in August. The summer was warm and dry, creating water stress and significant evapotranspiration during July and August. This lack of rainfall limited disease pressure, allowing the grapes to reach a healthy, advanced ripeness by harvest time.
Winemaking and aging
For the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020, the grapes were hand-harvested and sorted, with picking dates set through careful monitoring of ripeness at the parcel level. The juice undergoes a long, gentle pneumatic pressing followed by a 24-hour settling period before being racked into oak barrels, where both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place. The wine is then aged for around 12 months in barrel on its lees, followed by several additional months in stainless steel tank on fine lees, with only light fining and filtration applied if needed before bottling.
Grape Varieties
100 % chardonnay.
