A Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Shaped by Old Vines and Natural Winemaking at Domaine Prieuré Roch
The Estate
Founded in 1988 by Henry Frédéric Roch, Domaine Prieuré Roch is based in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, where it farms around twenty hectares, including three monopole clos. The estate is committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture, whole-cluster winemaking, and vinification with little to no added sulfur. Since Henry Frédéric Roch's passing in 2018, the property has been guided by Yannick Champ, co-director since 2010, who continues the founder's uncompromising, naturalist approach to Burgundy's most storied terroirs.
The Vineyard
This wine comes from a 1.0136-hectare plot at the heart of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, east-facing at an altitude of 240 to 250 meters. The vines, roughly 85 years old, grow on brown soils with loam and gravelly scree on the upper slope, resting on Prémeaux limestone bedrock, with clay-limestone soils further down the slope. The parcel is farmed organically and biodynamically, in line with the estate's broader viticultural philosophy.
Winemaking and aging
The 2019 Chambertin Clos de Bèze is vinified using whole clusters, with fermentation relying on indigenous yeasts and gentle foot-punching in large wooden vats. True to the estate's natural winemaking approach, little to no sulfur is added during fermentation or aging in wood, allowing the wine to express the fruit and terroir with minimal intervention.
