Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Gevrey-Chambertin Village "En Vosne" 2017 by Domaine Duroché
Tasting
Color
The wine displays a deep violet robe, a reflection of the natural concentration brought by the small, millerandé berries harvested from this old-vine parcel.
Nose
The nose opens on a floral and spicy register, built around notes of rosehip and wild rose, rounded out by a touch of licorice.
Palate
On the palate, the wine reveals a well-balanced structure, carried by lively acidity and a long finish sustained by the natural density of the fruit, a direct expression of the concentration brought by the millerandage of the berries.
Food and wine pairings
This Gevrey-Chambertin Village pairs nicely with delicate white meats and poultry served with a mushroom cream sauce, as well as with dishes built around wild mushrooms such as chanterelles, porcini, or morels. It also matches well with soft, bloomy-rind cheeses such as Brie, Chaource, or Saint-Marcellin.
Other characteristics
This wine reaches 13% alcohol by volume and is offered in 75cl and 150cl formats. The 2017 vintage is only the second release of this cuvée, which has been produced by the estate since 2016.
A Gevrey-Chambertin Village from Domaine Duroché, Marked by Old Vines and Floral Character
The Estate
Domaine Duroché was formally established in 1955, when Philippe Duroché purchased a cellar on Place du Monument in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, and placed the Duroché name above its door. The estate spans 8.5 hectares, entirely within the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, and is today run by Pierre Duroché, the fifth generation of the family, alongside his wife Marianne. Known for its old vines, reasoned farming, and precise winemaking, the estate has earned a three-star rating in the Revue du Vin de France's Guide Vert.
The Vineyard
The En Vosne cuvée comes from a village-level site located in the northern part of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, planted in 1934. These old vines naturally produce small, millerandé berries, a trait that concentrates sugars, acids, and phenolic compounds within each grain. As with the rest of the estate's holdings, the plot is tended using a reasoned approach that excludes synthetic herbicides and insecticides, relies on full soil cultivation, and favors massal selection to preserve the genetic diversity of the old vines.
The Vintage
The 2017 vintage in Burgundy is generally considered more approachable in its youth than the denser 2015 or 2018 vintages, typically offering balanced profiles, fine tannins, and open aromatics. For a village-level wine such as En Vosne, these conditions allowed for a clear and precise reading of the terroir from an early stage, while still preserving reasonable aging potential.
Winemaking and aging
As with all of Domaine Duroché's cuvées, the grapes for the Gevrey-Chambertin Village "En Vosne" 2017 are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before vinification with indigenous yeasts and moderate extraction, favoring finesse over power. Aging takes place in oak barrels, with a modest proportion of new wood generally between 10 and 20 percent, without systematic racking. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its density and natural complexity.
Grape Varieties
This wine is produced from 100% pinot noir, the sole grape variety permitted for red wines under the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation.
