Description
Tasting Notes and Pairing Suggestions for the Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 by Domaine Duroché
Tasting
Color
The Latricières-Chambertin typically shows a deep ruby robe shading toward dark cherry, a hue consistent with the concentration expected from this grand cru climate.
Nose
The bouquet is pure and notably expressive, opening on black fruit, plum, raspberry and strawberry, layered with rose petals, incense, exotic spice and a touch of white pepper that lingers on the back-end. Critics have described the aromatics as opulent yet precise, with a sense of focus that mirrors the definition typical of this climate.
Palate
The palate is full, deep and seamless, built around a cool core of fleshy fruit framed by lively acidity and velvety, supple tannins. Compared with riper vintages, the 2022 shows slightly softer acidity and a more generous, sensual texture, finishing on a long, perfumed and penetrating note. Tasted young, the wine still feels primal and will clearly benefit from further bottle age to unfold its full range.
Serving and cellaring
The Latricières-Chambertin 2022 is best approached with patience: in its youth it remains somewhat primal, and decanting is recommended to help its aromatic layers open up. Its structure and depth point to a wine built for extended cellaring, allowing it to gain further complexity over time.
Other characteristics
This is a dry red wine made from 100% pinot noir, with no residual sugar. As a Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, it falls within the appellation's regulatory alcohol range of 11.5% to 14.5% by volume. Each bottle is fitted with a Prooftag bubble seal, a serialized authentication system combining an alphanumeric code, a unique bubble pattern and a QR code, designed to guarantee traceability and protect against counterfeiting.
Domaine Duroché's Latricières-Chambertin: a cool, limestone-driven grand cru from Gevrey-Chambertin
The Estate
Domaine Duroché is a family-run estate located in Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. While the family's winegrowing roots date back to the early twentieth century, the estate as it stands today was established in 1955, when Philippe Duroché acquired the property on Gevrey-Chambertin's Place du Monument that remains its address, along with a parcel in Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. The domain now farms roughly 8 to 8.5 hectares exclusively within Gevrey-Chambertin, across village, premier cru and four grand cru climates. It is led today by fifth-generation winegrower Pierre Duroché, alongside his wife Marianne.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this wine come from Domaine Duroché's holding of about a quarter-hectare within the Latricières-Chambertin grand cru, located south of Gevrey's other grand crus, in direct continuation of Chambertin, at an elevation of roughly 240 to 250 meters on an east-facing slope. The soils rest on Bajocian limestone and marl, shallow, stony and well-drained, while the Combe de Grisard, cutting across the slope, channels cool air through the vineyard and tends to delay ripening relative to neighboring grand crus, giving Latricières its reputation as the coolest and most linear climate in Gevrey. The vines are mature, consistent with the estate's overall vineyard, where the youngest plantings exceed thirty years of age. Across its holdings, Domaine Duroché follows an "ultra-reasoned" approach to viticulture, excluding herbicides and insecticides, relying solely on copper and sulfur for vine protection, and maintaining cover crops between the rows.
The Vintage
Critical tastings comparing the 2022 to the 2020 vintage point to a warmer, more generous growing cycle in Latricières' typically cool microclimate, yielding riper fruit and softer acidity than in 2020, while still preserving the climate's characteristic freshness and depth.
Winemaking and aging
In keeping with Domaine Duroché's overall approach, the Latricières-Chambertin 2022 is vinified with moderate extraction and without added sulfur during fermentation, preserving fruit purity and texture. Aging takes place in barrel, with only a small proportion of new oak, over a period of 13 to 15 months, without racking for the first 12 months to avoid tiring the wine. The wine is bottled without fining and, in most cases, without filtration, in order to retain its natural texture and aromatic definition.
Grape Varieties
100% pinot noir.
