Description
A Gourmet and Expressive Vintage Rosé Champagne
The estate
Established for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the House of Champagne Philipponnat is one of the historic names of the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values that guide this house, whose spirit has remained family-oriented. Owned by the house since 1935, the legendary Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious clos in Champagne. This jewel is at the origin of rare champagnes endowed with exceptional power.
The vineyard
The House of Philipponnat watches over an exceptional Champagne vineyard spanning 20 hectares of Premier and Grand Cru sites in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.
The wine
The name of Philipponnat's Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru refers to the date on which the Philipponnat family settled in the village of Aÿ. This cuvée is crafted from the house's finest vineyards, notably the historic plots of "Léon" in Aÿ.
The vintage
2012 began with a winter and spring marked by frost and particularly cold conditions after flowering, causing significant coulure and low yields. A very wet July preceded a milder end of summer. The grapes harvested were of excellent quality, rich in sugar, giving rise to wines of beautiful freshness.
Winemaking and aging
Crafted from the house's greatest vineyards, this 2012 vintage champagne is partly vinified in wood without malolactic fermentation to preserve its freshness and develop its complexity. The addition of a Pinot Noir wine from the Clos des Goisses to the original blend gives it its rosé color. Benefiting from eight years of aging, this champagne is a refined expression of the minerality, freshness and balance of Champagne's greatest terroirs. Its dosage is 4.25 g/liter.
Blend
Pinot Noir (62%) from the historic "Léon" vineyard in Aÿ and Chardonnay (27%) from Verzy. This blend is rounded out with an addition of 11% Pinot Noir vinified as a red wine, from the vineyards of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.
