Description
Tasting Notes and Pairing Suggestions for the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Maltroie" 2022 Armand Heitz
Tasting
Color
This Chassagne-Montrachet displays a pale gold hue with subtle green highlights, typical of a young white Burgundy still in its first years of life.
Nose
The nose opens on bright citrus notes, with hints of lemongrass and ripe pear, followed by touches of hazelnut, anise, and coriander that add a spicy, aromatic dimension to the overall bouquet.
Palate
The palate is full-bodied and floral, combining textural richness with a lively, citrus-driven freshness. A chalky, mineral backbone supports the fruit, giving the wine a persistent, evolving finish that keeps revealing new facets throughout the tasting.
Food and Wine Pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with delicate fish dishes, grilled seafood prepared on the plancha, or gratinéed scallops. Its combination of richness and citrus tension also makes it a fine match for other refined seafood preparations and light, creamy sauces.
Serving and Cellaring
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Maltroie" 2022 can be enjoyed now or cellared, with an aging potential extending to approximately 2035.
The Estate
Armand Heitz leads the Heitz-Lochardet estate today, based in Chassagne-Montrachet, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. The property, formally established in the late 1980s, now spans roughly twenty hectares across the Côte de Beaune, complemented by vineyards in Beaujolais. Armand Heitz has built his approach around regenerative agriculture and agroecology, integrating livestock farming into a diversified, low-carbon model that reflects a broader vision of sustainable winegrowing.
The Vineyard
The La Maltroie plot lies within the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation, on a gently sloping site facing east to west, directly bordering the estate's family home. The soil is composed of brown limestone and marl over a Jurassic limestone bedrock, at an altitude of about 250 meters. The vines, planted entirely with chardonnay in 1973, 2003, and 2016, are trained at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare across approximately 0.71 hectare.
Winemaking and Aging
The grapes for the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Maltroie" 2022 are harvested in small crates and pressed as whole clusters, following regenerative viticultural practices applied to this specific plot. Fermentation takes place in tank over 10 to 14 days, followed by a complete malolactic conversion. The wine is then aged for 11 months in oak barrels, with 20 to 40 percent new wood, accompanied by regular lees stirring. It undergoes light filtration and moderate fining before bottling.
Grape Varieties
100% Chardonnay.
