Stony Hill Vineyard
The foundations of Stony Hill Vineyard were laid when Fred and Eleanor McCrea purchased a 160-acre goat ranch on the northeast slope o Spring Mountain in 1943. In 1947, the McCreas bought a used tractor and began planting their first vines mostly Chardonnay, which, at the time, was a relatively unknown grape in the United States with only 200 acres planted in California - the first vintage of Stony Hill Vineyard Chardonnay was released in 1952 and marketed by personal letter to Bay Area friends of the McCreas. Today, along with winemaker Mike Chelini and the other full-time employees of Stony Hill Vineyard, the second and third generations of the McCrea family continue to promote the vision of Eleanor and Fred more than sixty years later.
