Description
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions for the Sérafin Père & Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2019
Tasting
Nose
The nose opens on concentrated black fruit, with cassis and blackberry supported by ripe cherry, while well-integrated oak brings discreet notes of toast and spice in the background.
Palate
The palate is dense and structured, carrying polished tannins and a persistent finish that reflects the generous fruit and high ripeness typical of the domaine's style, rounded out by a long, satisfying close.
Serving and cellaring
This Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2019 is built along the same lines as the domaine's other cuvées, with a concentration and structure suited to aging. It can be enjoyed young for its vivid fruit, while also having the ability to evolve further over time in the cellar.
A Gevrey-Chambertin Village from Sérafin Père & Fils, Built on Ripeness and Structure
The Estate
Founded in 1947 by Stanislaus Sérafin, a Polish immigrant who settled in Burgundy, Sérafin Père & Fils is a family-run estate located in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The domaine farms close to six hectares across Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, and Morey-Saint-Denis. Today it is run by the third generation, Karine Sérafin and her cousin Frédérique Goulley, who continue a style marked by density, ripeness, and careful oak aging across the range, from village wines to grand cru Charmes-Chambertin.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this wine come from village-level parcels within the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, part of a mosaic of clay-limestone soils that vary in depth and stone content across the commune. These parcels are farmed using sustainable practices, without herbicides or chemical fertilizers, and are harvested by hand to allow careful selection of the grapes at full ripeness.
The Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Burgundy is generally regarded as ripe, concentrated, and well balanced, producing red wines with above-average aging potential compared to other recent vintages.
Winemaking and aging
Vinification at the domaine follows a traditional approach, with controlled extraction aimed at preserving purity and depth. The Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2019 is aged in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new wood adjusted according to the cuvée so that the oak remains well integrated rather than dominant. The wine is left unfiltered, in keeping with the domaine's approach to wines built for cellaring.
Grape Varieties
This wine is produced from 100 % pinot noir, the sole grape variety used for red wines in Gevrey-Chambertin.
