Description
The generosity and richness of a great Tuscan red wine
The estate
Fattoria Poggio di Sotto is situated in the south of Tuscany, in Italy. Founded in 1989, this estate is renowned for the high quality of its Sangiovese-based wines and is considered one of the finest estates within the Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. appellation.
Located between 200 to 400 metres above sea level on steep slopes, the 16-hectare vineyard is certified in organic farming. The soil type and the sun exposure differs depending on the geographical location of the plots.
The vineyard's varying soil types, sun exposures and altitudes, combined with a thorough selection of the best grapes and a rigorous vinification process, give these wines a rare aromatic richness and complexity, all of which have lead to Fattoria Poggio’s fame and recognition.
The vineyard
This 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva by Poggio di Sotto is made from a rigorous selection of old vines. Located in the Castelnuovo dell'Abate area, facing the Val d'Orcia in the south-eastern part of Montalcino, these vineyards lie on poor and stony soils, composed of clay and limestone.
The vintage
Throughout spring and until June, mild and sunny weather conditions alternated with cool temperatures and heavy rainfall. The summer months are marked by a hot and relatively dry weather. From mid-August to mid-September, the noticeable temperature variations between daytime and nighttime led to the even and optimal ripening of the grapes.
The vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand and are rigorously sorted. This wine, produced in small quantities, is vinified in oak barrels using wild yeasts. Fermentation is accompanied by long macerations. The wine is aged for 45 months in 30 hl Slavonian oak barrels.
The blend
This 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva by Poggio di Sotto is a 100% Sangiovese.
The tasting
Powerful and elegant, this Tuscan wine showcases a ruby red colour and reveals, throughout the tasting experience, a beautiful structure and delicious fruity and spicy aromas.
Food and wine pairing
This Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016 by Poggio di Sotto will pair with roasted or braised red meats, game or mature cheeses beautifully.
