Description
Bourgogne Rouge Joseph Drouhin: A Pinot Noir Marked by the Generosity of the 2023 Vintage
Tasting
Nose
This red Pinot Noir opens with an expressive bouquet of ripe red and black fruit, a direct reflection of the warmth that defined the 2023 growing season in Burgundy.
Palate
The palate unfolds smoothly, showing length and a confident complexity, with the fruit-driven character carried by a round, generous texture typical of a warm vintage.
The Estate
Founded in Beaune in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin, Maison Joseph Drouhin remains a family-run estate at the heart of Burgundy. Today led by the fourth generation—Frédéric, Véronique, Philippe and Laurent Drouhin—the house farms close to 100 hectares across the region, entirely under organic and biodynamic practices. Recognized as a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy, the estate crafts nearly 90 appellations from chardonnay and pinot noir, combining family tradition with a continuous pursuit of refinement.
The Vineyard
This Bourgogne rouge is produced from pinot noir vines grown across Burgundy's red-wine appellations, part of the roughly 40 hectares the estate devotes to this variety. The vines are rooted in predominantly clay-limestone soils and are cultivated under organic and biodynamic principles, with high planting densities that encourage deep root systems and a precise expression of the surrounding terroir.
The Vintage
The 2023 vintage stands out as one of the warmest ever recorded in Burgundy, surpassing even 2022 in overall heat. Sustained warm conditions throughout the growing season supported steady, generous yields across the region, allowing the grapes to reach full ripeness by harvest time.
Winemaking and Aging
For the Bourgogne 2023, Joseph Drouhin follows the winemaking approach applied across its range, where fermentation and aging decisions are guided primarily by tasting rather than fixed protocols. Indigenous yeasts are favored, and when oak is used for aging, the barrels are made from wood carefully selected and air-dried for three years, resulting in a refined, well-integrated character rather than a pronounced toasted profile.
Grape Varieties
100% pinot noir.
