Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clavoillon" 2022 Domaine Leflaive
Tasting
Color
The wine shows a pale lemon-yellow color with subtle green highlights, revealing a bright, youthful appearance typical of a chardonnay still in its primary phase.
Nose
The nose opens with notes of pear and fresh citrus zest, joined by nuances of apple and lime that bring vibrancy to the aromatic profile. Delicate lime blossom notes add a floral, airy dimension, while hints of wet stone and light reduction evoke the wine's pronounced minerality. With aeration, subtle toasted hazelnut and buttery croissant notes emerge, along with light touches of toasted wheat, reflecting a measured contribution from barrel aging.
Palate
The palate reveals a fresh, vibrant acidity that provides structure and energy throughout. The texture is satiny and enveloping, offering medium to full body without ever feeling heavy. Flavors of citrus, apple, and subtle minerality unfold across the palate, leading to a long, saline finish with a touch of spice. This is a wine built on tension rather than richness, reflecting the precise, mineral-driven style of the Clavoillon climat.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with fine seafood and shellfish, such as scallops, lobster, or oysters, where its saline character echoes the ocean's briny notes. It also complements delicate white fish prepared with butter-based sauces, as well as white meats served with cream and mushroom sauces, which harmonize with its hazelnut and brioche nuances.
Serving and cellaring
The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clavoillon" 2022 is best served at a temperature of around 12–14°C (54–57°F). Given its slightly reserved character in youth, decanting for 30 minutes to an hour is recommended to help the bouquet open up fully. This wine has notable aging potential and will reward several years of cellaring, allowing its minerality and texture to gain further complexity over time.
Other characteristics
This is a dry white wine with an alcohol content of approximately 13% and notably elevated acidity for a white Burgundy, both contributing to its structure and aging potential.
A Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru shaped by precision and minerality
The Estate
Domaine Leflaive has been rooted in Puligny-Montrachet, in the heart of Burgundy, for three centuries, though the estate as a structured winemaking entity took shape in the early twentieth century under Joseph Leflaive, who began acquiring vineyard parcels and replanting the estate following the phylloxera crisis. Today, Domaine Leflaive remains a family-owned, independent estate spanning roughly 24 to 26 hectares, including a significant proportion of grand cru and premier cru holdings. The estate is currently led by Brice de La Morandière, who continues the legacy established by Anne-Claude Leflaive, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy during the 1990s. Domaine Leflaive is widely recognized among the finest producers of white Burgundy.
The Vineyard
The Clavoillon climat, classified as premier cru within the Puligny-Montrachet appellation, covers 4.69 hectares, almost entirely owned by Domaine Leflaive. The vines, planted exclusively with chardonnay, were established across several periods, including 1962, 1972, 1973, 1981, 1983, 1988, and 2012, resulting in a mix of older and younger vines. The soil is clay-limestone, typical of Puligny-Montrachet, offering both water retention and effective drainage. The vineyard is cultivated using biodynamic methods, with an emphasis on living soils, biodiversity, and minimal intervention.
The Vintage
Specific details regarding the 2022 growing season for the Clavoillon parcel were not disclosed by the estate.
Winemaking and aging
Grapes for the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clavoillon" 2022 are harvested by hand and sorted before undergoing a long, gentle pressing. Following a 24-hour settling period, the juice is transferred into oak barrels, where approximately 22% new oak is used, for alcoholic and malolactic fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged on its lees in barrel for about 12 months, followed by a secondary aging period of 6 to 10 months in stainless steel or neutral tanks on fine lees, before bottling with minimal intervention.
Grape Variety
100% chardonnay.
