Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Pommard 1er cru "Clos Blanc" 2019 Domaine Génot-Boulanger
Tasting
Color
The wine displays a deep, intense ruby robe, a shade that speaks to the fruit concentration drawn from old vines planted on the chalky soils of Clos Blanc.
Nose
The bouquet opens on sun-warmed cherry, loganberry and damson plum, layered with peony and sandalwood, before evolving toward subtler notes of smoke and musk, all resting on a deep, earthy base.
Palate
The attack is pure, clean and incisive for a warm vintage, combining tension, vibrancy and generosity. The fruit is ample and well-defined, carried by finely extracted, structured tannins and a long finish where smoky and musky nuances meet a chalky, mineral backbone.
Food and wine pairings
The estate recommends this Pommard with endive wrapped in ham baked in parchment, seared red tuna steak, or grilled pork chops. More broadly, its structure and fruit intensity make it a fitting match for roasted or grilled red meats, as well as firm, flavorful cheeses such as aged mountain-style varieties.
Serving and cellaring
The Pommard 1er cru "Clos Blanc" 2019 can be enjoyed now in its youthful phase, with a recommended drinking window extending to around 2033. It is best served at a cool cellar temperature, around 60–64°F (16–18°C), ideally after a short decanting to let its aromatic layers unfold.
Other characteristics
This wine reaches 13.5% alcohol by volume, a level that reflects the ripe but balanced character of the 2019 vintage. It is neither fined nor filtered, a choice that preserves its texture and aromatic depth.
A Pommard 1er Cru Marked by Precision and Chalky Minerality
The Estate
Founded in 1974 by Charles-Henri Génot and Marie Boulanger in Meursault, Burgundy, Domaine Génot-Boulanger has grown into a 22-hectare property spanning around thirty appellations, from the Côte de Nuits to the Côte Chalonnaise. Today led by Aude and Guillaume Lavollée, the fourth generation at the helm, the estate has been certified organic since 2018 and is known for its mosaic of terroirs and its discreet, parcel-by-parcel approach to winemaking.
The Vineyard
This cuvée comes from a small plot of about 0.3 to 0.33 hectares within the Pommard premier cru climat of Clos Blanc, located on the northern edge of the appellation, adjoining Les Grands Epenots. The vines, planted in 1933, grow on pale, chalky clay-limestone alluvial soils with a southeast-to-east exposure, and are farmed organically with close, parcel-specific attention to soil life and vine balance.
The Vintage
The 2019 growing season in Burgundy was warm and dry overall, leading to advanced phenolic ripeness and generous sugar levels, yet it retained higher acidity than the previous vintage, allowing for wines that combine ripeness with freshness and definition.
Winemaking and aging
For the Pommard 1er cru "Clos Blanc" 2019, grapes were harvested entirely by hand and fully destemmed before fermenting with indigenous yeasts over a two- to three-week maceration, using gentle extraction through pump-overs and limited punching down. The wine was then aged for about twelve months in oak barrels, with 10 to 15% new wood, followed by six months in stainless steel tanks to restore freshness, before bottling without fining or filtration.
Grape Variety
100% pinot noir.
