Domaine A.F. Gros and Clos Vougeot: a refined red wine from Burgundy's largest grand cru
The Estate
Domaine A.F. Gros was founded in 1988 in Pommard, Burgundy, when Anne-Françoise Gros brought together her inherited share of family vines from Vosne-Romanée with the Pommard holdings of her husband, François Parent. The estate has since grown to roughly fourteen hectares across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Today, the property is run by the founders' children, Caroline and Mathias Parent, with Mathias overseeing the vineyards and winemaking and Caroline in charge of commercial development. Domaine A.F. Gros is recognized among Burgundy's notable Pinot Noir producers.
The Vineyard
Clos Vougeot is the largest grand cru of the Côte d'Or, covering around fifty hectares and shared among more than eighty owners. The climat presents a mosaic of soils: limestone and gravel over oolitic limestone in the upper section near Musigny and Grands-Échézeaux, a mix of limestone, gravel and clay on the gentler mid-slope, and heavier clay soils on the flatter lower ground. For this 2021 vintage, the fruit used by Domaine A.F. Gros came from purchased grapes sourced within this appellation, ahead of the estate's later integration of its own family-owned parcels in Clos Vougeot.
The Vintage
The 2021 growing season in Burgundy was marked by severe spring frosts that reduced yields across the region, followed by a cooler summer. These conditions generally reinforced natural acidity and aromatic purity in the resulting wines, provided that phenolic ripeness was carefully managed in the vineyard.
Winemaking and Aging
This Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Domaine 2021 follows the estate's established approach to its grand cru cuvées: hand-harvested fruit, careful sorting, cold maceration to favor gentle extraction of color and aroma, and fermentation in vat before malolactic conversion in barrel. Aging takes place in French oak barrels over an extended period typical of the domaine's grand crus, with a significant, though increasingly moderated, proportion of new wood intended to support structure while preserving the expression of the fruit.
Grape Varieties
100% pinot noir.
