Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru "Les Saint-Georges" 2019 from Domaine A.F. Gros
Tasting
Color
This wine shows a deep, dark robe, in keeping with the concentration typically found in wines from the Les Saint-Georges climat.
Nose
The nose opens on ripe black fruit and spice, with hints of black fruit preserve and a touch of licorice, reflecting the depth this terroir is known to express.
Palate
The palate is vigorous and penetrating, built on a dense, concentrated fruit core supported by abundant yet finely chiseled tannins. The finish shows real length, with an underlying freshness that balances the structure and suggests a long aging curve ahead.
A Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru from Domaine A.F. Gros, built on structure and depth
The Estate
Domaine A.F. Gros was founded in 1988 in Pommard, Burgundy, through the union of Anne-Françoise Gros, heir to vines passed down by her father Jean Gros in Vosne-Romanée, and François Parent, a Pommard winemaker who became the estate's winemaker. The property remains owned by Anne-Françoise Gros and François Parent, while their children, Caroline and Mathias Parent, have led the estate's day-to-day management and winemaking since 2013. Recognized for elegant, age-worthy pinot noir, the domaine farms close to fourteen hectares across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune, and the Moulin-à-Vent cru in Beaujolais.
The Vineyard
The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru "Les Saint-Georges" 2019 comes from the climat of the same name, located south of the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges on the Côte de Nuits. This premier cru is regarded as one of the appellation's finest sites, often cited as a natural candidate for promotion to grand cru status given the power and depth its wines can reach.
The Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Burgundy is remembered as a warm year that produced concentrated, ripe red wines. The fruit reached good density and the tannins matured fully, while sufficient underlying acidity preserved freshness, pointing toward strong aging potential for wines built on this kind of structure.
Winemaking and aging
As with the other red cuvées of Domaine A.F. Gros, the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru "Les Saint-Georges" 2019 is harvested by hand, with careful sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. The estate has progressively expanded its use of whole-cluster fermentation and reduced the share of new oak across its range, favoring maceration and aging choices that let the terroir speak rather than the wood. Aging takes place in oak barrels, for a duration adapted to the appellation level, between the shorter aging given to regional wines and the longer aging reserved for grand crus.
Grape Varieties
This wine is made from 100 % pinot noir, the only red grape variety permitted in the Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru appellation.
