D'Arenberg : Laughing Magpie 2009

The d'Arenberg 2009 Laughing Magpie is McLaren Vale's first ever Shiraz Viognier az blend. This wine begins by cofermenting the 85% red Shiraz grapes with 15% white Viognier grapes. The acidity and lighter tones of the Viognier help to balance the heartier fruit tones of the Shiraz. The final blend is made by adding in some juice from the Dead Arm Shiraz, bringing the Viognier percentage down to 5-10%. The result is a wine with primary dark fruits on the nose along with a lifted floral quality and a hint of mint. Great intensity follows on the palate with expressive notes of raspberry, plum, and black currant. The silky tannins provide structure and great length to the Laughing Magpie by d'Arenberg.
