A Tuscan wine captivating with freshness and precision

The estate
Created in 1987 in Bolgheri in Tuscany, Masseto spans 7 hectares of vineyard on exceptional clay soils, perfectly suited to Merlot. Owned by the Marchesi de Frescobaldi since 2005, this exceptional estate is managed by Giovanni Geddes da Filicaja, with Michel Rolland as enological consultant since 1991. Recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Italian wines, it is acclaimed by international critics for its excellence.

The vineyard
Massetino comes from the vineyards of Bolgheri located in Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno. This Tuscan terroir benefits from the IGT Toscana appellation and offers ideal conditions for the flourishing of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The vintage
The year 2023 proved demanding, beginning with a mild winter with slightly above average temperatures and rainfall, promoting early vegetative growth. Spring brought abundant rains that replenished water reserves, requiring constant work in the vineyards. The summer saw high temperatures reaching 35°C without extreme peaks, allowing for regular ripening of the berries thanks to spring water reserves. Late August rains and cool September nights enhanced aromatic complexity, preserved acidity, and balanced phenolic and technological maturity.

Winemaking and aging
The grapes are hand-harvested into 15 kg crates. After destemming and a light pressing, they are gravity-fed into concrete tanks without pumping. Each parcel is vinified separately. Spontaneous fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts at 25–28 °C with 2 to 3 punch-downs per day. Maceration lasts 21 to 25 days in tank. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels of which 50 % are new. The wine is aged for 12 months in barrel before Blend, followed by 4 additional months in concrete tanks before bottling.

Grape varieties
Merlot (91 %) and Cabernet Franc (9 %).
