Description
Located in Vosne Romanee, Domaine Meo-Camuzet owns 20 hectares of some of the best crus in Burgundy. Upon its founding in 1891, Meo-Camuzet has been producing balanced and pure wines that reflect the beauty and diversity of each parcel in the Cote d’Or. Today, owner Jean-Nicolas Meo produces six Grand Crus, 10 Premiere Crus and numerous terroir driven village wines under the Domaine Meo-Camuzet label. The property itself was passed down through three generations before producing the first wine under the Meo-Camuzet label in 1983. It’s first owner, Etienne Camuzet was a politician and viognier who rented out his plots of land to trusted sharecroppers while he worked in Paris.
A new chapter began as Jean-Nicolas graduated from business and oenology school to work alongside the sharecroppers on his family’s land. With the help and mentorship from renowned winemakers Henri Jayer and Christian Faurois who worked on the Meo-Camuzet property for years, it is no surprise Jean-Nicolas succeeded in creating gorgeous examples of Burgundy wines.
Echezeaux is a Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote de Nuit subregion of Burgundy, producing Pinot Noir wines. Encompassing nearly 40 hectares of cru vineyards, Echezeaux is one of the larger sites within Burgundy. Pinot Noir from this area is generally fuller bodied with plenty of red fruit, notes of spice and earth and great balance of tannins and acidity, allowing for age worthy wines.
The Meo-Camuzet Echezeaux Grand Cru Les Rouges du Bas 2013 is a wonderful expression of the terroir in the Echezeaux Grand Cru. The grapes sourced for this wine ripen quickly, retaining higher sugar levels and acidity to produce intensely concentrated wines. Located at the upper plots of the Echezeaux appellation, the grapes also benefit from higher altitude creating aromatic freshness. Additionally, thinner soils allowing for better drainage to produce healthy grapes. The 2013 vintage gives off powerful aromas of black and red fruit opening up to hints of vegetal and smoky touches. The palate is voluptuous and charming. Silky tannins, great length and an enticing combination of earthy fruity notes leave you wanting more.
