Description
Tasting Notes and Recommendations for the Domaine Matrot Meursault 2023
Tasting
Color
The wine shows a pale gold hue with light green highlights, bright and clear, reflecting the freshness of a young, well-balanced vintage.
Nose
The nose is rich and layered, opening on notes of butter and floral honey intertwined with white flowers such as lily and lily of the valley. Ripe pear and dried fruit such as hazelnut, almond and Brazil nut add depth, while hints of wet stone, fine spice, citrus and chalky minerality bring freshness and precision. Subtle toasted hazelnut and a light creamy touch, likely drawn from the aging process, complete the aromatic picture.
Palate
The attack is ample and silky, almost caressing, before the wine gains intensity and a vibrant mineral edge. A pronounced salinity enlivens the dense, concentrated fruit, giving the wine real energy and lift. The finish is long and persistent, combining a sense of ripe yellow fruit with a crisp, chalky, citrus-tinged freshness that keeps the whole structure balanced and precise.
Food and wine pairings
This Meursault pairs beautifully with dishes that have an iodized, seafood character, such as shellfish, crustaceans or white fish served with a light butter or cream sauce. It is equally at home with white meats such as poultry or veal in creamy or buttery preparations, where its richness and salinity bring balance to the dish. It also makes a fine match for soft, creamy cheeses, whose milky texture echoes the wine's own lactic and hazelnut notes.
Serving and cellaring
The Domaine Matrot Meursault 2023 is best served at a temperature of around 12 to 13°C, ideally after about an hour of aeration in the bottle or a brief pass through a decanter to open up its aromas. Based on tasting assessments, it may be enjoyed from around 2026 and should be consumed until around 2033.
Other characteristics
This is a dry white wine with an alcohol content of approximately 13%. The grapes are grown following organic farming practices, and the wine is fermented using indigenous yeasts rather than commercial strains, underlining its focus on natural, terroir-driven winemaking.
A Meursault from Domaine Matrot, Precise and Mineral in Expression
The Estate
Domaine Matrot was founded in 1909 by Joseph Matrot, although the family's winegrowing roots in Meursault trace back to 1835. Located in the village of Meursault, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, the estate farms around 22 to 24 hectares across several prestigious appellations. It is today run by sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot, representing the sixth generation of the family. The estate has followed organic farming practices since 2000 and began the formal certification process in 2023, reflecting a long-standing commitment to sustainable viticulture.
The Vineyard
This Domaine Matrot Meursault is drawn from twelve separate parcels within the Meursault appellation, each harvested and vinified individually before being blended together after aging. The vines grow on limestone and clay-limestone soils typical of the area, within the Côte de Beaune, with an average vine age of around 35 years. The vineyard is farmed organically, with grapes harvested by hand to allow for careful sorting at every stage.
The Vintage
The 2023 growing season in Burgundy proved favorable overall, producing wines with notable freshness alongside well-balanced ripeness. At Domaine Matrot, this quality was further reinforced by a strict selection at harvest, with around 25% of the grapes set aside to ensure that only the best fruit was retained for vinification.
Winemaking and aging
For this Meursault, the hand-picked grapes undergo a slow fermentation relying solely on indigenous yeasts, with careful temperature control throughout the process. The wine is then aged on its lees for about fifteen months in 228-liter oak barrels that are one to five years old, with no new oak used, before spending some additional time in tank ahead of bottling.
Grape Varieties
This wine is made from 100% chardonnay.
