Description
Tasting Notes and Recommendations for the 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier
Tasting
Color
The wine reveals a deep, sustained red hue with garnet reflections, typical of a grand cru from a warm, ripe vintage, while retaining the brightness and clarity characteristic of a Pinot Noir crafted with gentle extraction.
Nose
The nose opens on wild berries and plum, layered with delicate peony blossom notes. Hints of orange peel add a refined, slightly bitter lift, while exotic spice nuances bring further complexity to this aromatically rich and multidimensional bouquet.
Palate
The palate is full-bodied, rich and muscular, showing impressive reserves of concentration and depth. Despite this density, the wine remains remarkably vibrant and fine-boned, with firm yet ripe tannins and a lively acidity that carries the fruit through to a long, structured finish.
Food and wine pairings
This Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru pairs beautifully with dishes more robust than those typically served with Chambolle-Musigny wines. Braised meats in rich sauces, such as a slow-cooked beef daube, as well as furred or feathered game like venison or wild duck, make excellent companions, echoing the wine's structure, dark fruit and spice.
Serving and cellaring
The estate recommends cellaring this wine for 5 to 10 years before drinking, allowing it to fully reveal its potential. For the 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, this translates into a recommended drinking window beginning around 2025 and extending to approximately 2030.
A Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru Between the Finesse of Chambolle-Musigny and the Structure of Morey-Saint-Denis
The Estate
Founded in 1863 around the Château de Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is today led by Frédéric Mugnier, fifth generation of the founding family. The estate spans roughly 13.5 to 14 hectares, planted almost entirely to pinot noir across Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Known for its minimalist, non-interventionist winemaking, the domaine is recognized for producing some of the purest and most sought-after expressions of its Burgundian terroirs.
The Vineyard
The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru parcel farmed by the domaine covers a narrow 0.36-hectare strip of land running along the full height of the slope between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. The vines were planted in 1961, 1980 and 1988, combining older, deeply rooted plants with younger vines now reaching full maturity. Farming follows organic principles without formal certification, relying on surface tilling rather than herbicides, contact-based copper and sulfur treatments, and low yields to encourage concentration and a true sense of place.
The Vintage
The 2020 growing season in Burgundy was marked by a warm, early cycle that pushed grapes toward high ripeness levels ahead of the usual calendar. These conditions generally favored rich, concentrated fruit, while careful vineyard management was needed to preserve the freshness and balance for which the region's finest wines are known.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes destined for the 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru are entirely destemmed and fermented using indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats, with a maceration period of about 20 days. The wine is then aged for roughly 18 months in French oak barrels, with around 15% new wood and two rackings, before being blended in stainless steel tanks for an additional three months and bottled in June or July.
