Description
Tasting Notes and Serving Recommendations for Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022, Domaine G. Roumier
Tasting
Color
This Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 displays a deep ruby red hue, in keeping with the dense, concentrated character typical of this grand cru.
Nose
The nose is ebullient and generous, revealing black cherries and wild strawberries alongside crushed violets and subtle hints of inkwell, echoing the floral and mineral signature brought by the Terres Blanches soils.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied, built on fine, well-integrated tannins and a real backbone. Layers of red and blue fruit are woven through a distinctly mineral structure, leading to a finish that fans out generously, marked by a lip-smacking salinity.
Food and wine pairings
This Bonnes-Mares pairs beautifully with roast beef, as well as grilled or roasted red meats and roasted game birds. It also shows well alongside aged cheeses such as comté or beaufort, whose nutty, buttery notes echo the wine's richness without overwhelming its finesse.
Serving and cellaring
Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 is best served at around 16 to 17°C. Given its youth, decanting is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the aromatic layers to unfold fully. According to critic Neal Martin, this wine can be enjoyed from 2028 to 2055 approximately.
A Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine G. Roumier, Rooted in the Chambolle-Musigny Terroir of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits
The Estate
Domaine G. Roumier was founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. Enlarged in the 1950s and later directed by Jean-Marie Roumier from 1961, the estate now spans roughly 11.8 hectares across some of the region's most sought-after grand cru and premier cru sites. Today, Christophe Roumier, grandson of the founder, leads the property, continuing a family approach centered on precise, terroir-driven winemaking and minimal cellar intervention.
The Vineyard
This Bonnes-Mares comes from a 1.3919-hectare plot located on the northern edge of Chambolle-Musigny, bordering Morey-Saint-Denis. The vineyard is split evenly between two soil types: the upper "Terres Blanches," calcareous marls rich in fossilized oyster shells, and the lower "Terres Rouges," clay-limestone soils resting on compact Bathonian rock. Facing east, the vines sit between 270 and 310 meters in altitude on a 15 to 20% slope, with an average vine age of around 40 years, trained using the Guyot method and yielding approximately 30 hectoliters per hectare.
The Vintage
The 2022 growing season in Burgundy was marked by warm conditions and comparatively early ripening, allowing the grapes to reach high phenolic maturity while the vineyard's altitude and limestone-rich soils helped preserve freshness and mineral tension in the fruit.
Winemaking and aging
Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 was hand-harvested and sorted before fermentation with indigenous yeasts, using 75% whole clusters to bring additional structure and aromatic depth without any green or stemmy character. Maceration included regular punching down of the cap, and no enzymes, fining, or filtration were used, preserving the wine's natural texture. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 16 months in oak barrels aged two to eight years, around 30% of them new, with the lots from the Terres Rouges and Terres Blanches parcels blended together before bottling.
Grape Varieties
This wine is produced from 100% pinot noir.
