Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Musigny Grand Cru 2017 Domaine Faiveley
Tasting
Color
This Musigny Grand Cru 2017 displays a red hue typical of a mature expression of pinot noir, with a depth that reflects the concentration achieved on this small Chambolle-Musigny plot.
Nose
The nose of the Musigny Grand Cru 2017 can appear somewhat closed in its youth, a trait linked to whole-cluster vinification and new oak aging. With time in the glass, it gradually reveals a bouquet of dark fruit, orange zest, and rose petals, framed by subtle menthol and herbal nuances inherited from the stems.
Palate
On the palate, this wine from Domaine Faiveley shows remarkable class, with finely filigreed tannins and a firm yet elegant grip. The fruit core remains fresh and precise, while the finish stretches long and distinctly mineral, echoing the limestone bedrock of the Musigny climat.
Food and wine pairings
Given its fine tannic structure and aromatic complexity, this wine pairs naturally with delicate red meats, fine poultry, and feathered game. It also complements dishes built around mushrooms or citrus-infused sauces, such as roasted pigeon with a light jus, veal with a subtle demi-glace, or truffled Bresse poultry.
Serving and cellaring
The Musigny Grand Cru 2017 benefits from extended cellaring, with critics pointing to an optimal drinking window extending to around 2055. This long aging potential stems from its tannic architecture, natural acidity, and the quality of its oak aging, which should allow the wine to gain further harmony over time.
The Estate
Domaine Faiveley was created in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the heart of Burgundy. Today led by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, representing the seventh generation of the family, the estate has grown into one of the largest landholders in Burgundy, while maintaining meticulous, parcel-by-parcel attention across its most prestigious climats, including Musigny Grand Cru.
The Vineyard
This Musigny Grand Cru comes from an extremely small plot located on the rocky terrace above Clos de Vougeot, in Chambolle-Musigny, within the Burgundy appellation of Musigny Grand Cru. The vines, planted in 1945 and 1990, grow on a shallow soil of limestone, red clay, and gravel, with an east-facing orientation that favors balanced ripening. The plot, covering roughly 0.13 to 0.14 hectare, is cultivated according to sustainable practices consistent with the estate's broader environmental commitments.
The Vintage
The 2017 growing season in Burgundy is generally regarded as favorable, with conditions that allowed for balanced ripening and reasonable yields. This climatic context contributed to wines showing harmony between fruit maturity and tannic structure, making the vintage approachable earlier than some of its predecessors while still retaining aging potential.
Winemaking and aging
The Musigny Grand Cru 2017 is vinified using whole clusters, a method that lends a finely woven tannic texture and distinct aromatic nuances. Aging takes place in 100% new oak, often in small feuillette barrels, over a period of around 18 months, with only a very limited number of barrels produced given the tiny size of the plot.
Grape Varieties
100% pinot noir.
