Description
The complexity and richness of a Mazis-Chambertin red wine from Faiveley
The estate
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley in the village of Nuits, the Joseph Faiveley house is one of the finest references of the Côte de Nuits. Now led by Erwan & Eve Faiveley, the 7th generation of the family, the Faiveley house offers wine lovers a superb range reflecting the full mosaic of Burgundy's terroirs with precision.
The vineyard
While the Faiveley estate was historically established in the Côte de Nuits in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the house has gradually expanded its vineyards into the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. The Faiveley estate now owns 12 Grands Crus and 25 Premiers Crus in Burgundy and watches over an exceptional heritage of vines.
The wine
The Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 from Domaine Faiveley is crafted from a 1.56-hectare, east-facing plot. The vines were planted in 1937, 1959, and 1974 on shallow soils.
The vintage
The particularly mild and dry winter led to early budbreak. While April began with frost episodes that did not affect the vineyard, the month ended, after 7 weeks of drought, with much-needed rainfall. The vintage's earliness was confirmed, running 24 days ahead of 2019. During May, flowering was even across the Côte Chalonnaise and Côte de Beaune thanks to a sunny (25°C) and slightly windy period, but was disrupted in the Côte de Nuits due to rainy, cool weather. Summer was extremely dry, causing significant water stress, except in the Nuits-Vougeot area, which experienced a major storm on August 1st. True to this vintage's pattern, the harvest began early.
Winemaking and aging
The hand-harvested grapes underwent a short cold pre-fermentation maceration before vinification, partly in wooden conical vats. Maceration lasted more than 3 weeks. Aging took place for 16 to 18 months in vaulted cellars dating back to the 19th century. The proportion of new barrels varies by vintage.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
