Tasting and Serving Recommendations for Echezeaux Grand Cru "En Orveaux" 2019 by Domaine Faiveley
Tasting
Color
The wine shows a clear, deep ruby robe, intense and bright, reflecting an accomplished ripeness of the fruit.
Nose
The nose unveils a rich bouquet of ripe cherries, blackberries, and wild raspberries, interwoven with red and black fruit notes, dark spices, violet, and a subtle hint of smoke brought by the oak aging.
Palate
The palate reveals an elegant yet powerful structure, with silky tannins, lively acidity, and a precise minerality. The texture is velvety, carried by a concentrated fruit character balanced with crystalline freshness, leading to a long, complex finish marked by delicate spice notes.
Food and wine pairings
This grand cru pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, duck breast, or mushroom-based dishes, whose earthy character echoes the wine's spice and fruit complexity.
Serving and cellaring
Echezeaux Grand Cru "En Orveaux" 2019 is best served at a temperature between 61 and 64°F (16–18°C). It is recommended to decant the wine for about 30 minutes before tasting in order to fully reveal its aromatic complexity. According to the estate, this grand cru offers an exceptional aging potential, with a cellaring capacity of 10 to 25 years.
The Estate
Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, by Pierre Faiveley. Today, the estate spans more than 120 hectares across the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Chablis, including 12 grand crus and 22 premier crus. Now led by the seventh generation, siblings Erwan and Eve Faiveley, the estate is recognized for its historic ties to the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and its full conversion to certified organic viticulture, completed in 2025.
The Vineyard
The Echezeaux Grand Cru "En Orveaux" comes from a 0.83-hectare plot owned by Domaine Faiveley, situated at elevation between the Musigny vineyard of Domaine Prieur and the estate's own Chambolle-Musigny premier cru Combe d'Orveau. The soil is shallow, marl-based, and low in clay, with a south-facing exposure. The vines were planted in 1950, 1956, and 1982, giving the plot a notable average age.
The Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Burgundy is noted for combining concentrated fruit with a crystalline freshness, suggesting warm conditions tempered by sufficient balance to preserve acidity and aromatic precision in the grapes.
Winemaking and aging
Echezeaux Grand Cru "En Orveaux" 2019 is vinified using traditional methods, including an extended maceration that allows for a gradual, careful extraction of tannins and color. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a measured use of new wood intended to add complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit.
Grape Varieties
100% pinot noir.
