James Suckling

Stuart Pigott

A giant amongst the 2021 Grand Cru red Burgundies, but still a sleeping giant. In spite of the stunning concentration on the rather full-bodied palate for the vintage, the stony minerality and bright acidity give this great drive at the very long finish. A hint of green pepper on the nose from the use of whole clusters. Try from 2026.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is, curiously, a little disjointed on the nose compared to its peers, though it comes together with pretty red cherry, wild strawberry, undergrowth and tobacco. The aromatics grow on you. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame the hoisin-tinged red fruit. Slightly powdery in texture toward the finish, which shows assiduous use of whole bunch, there is a lingering residual white pepper note that is very appealing. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
