Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 Pierre Girardin
Tasting
Color
This Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru typically shows the deep ruby robe associated with this Gevrey-Chambertin grand cru, consistent with the traditional appearance of wines from this climat.
Nose
The nose is built around the aromatic register traditionally associated with this terroir, combining red fruit, licorice, spice, rose and violet, with light touches of undergrowth that are characteristic of the climat.
Palate
On the palate, the style of this grand cru is traditionally powerful, opulent and complex, carried by a fine, well-knit tannic structure that gives the wine both volume and elegance, reflecting the signature finesse of the Griotte-Chambertin terroir.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs naturally with roasted game birds such as pheasant or grouse, served with a reduced pan sauce and mushrooms, as well as with fine poultry like free-range chicken or stuffed guinea fowl. It also suits noble red meats, such as roasted beef tenderloin or rack of lamb, particularly when accompanied by reduced sauces, root vegetables and aromatic herbs. For a more delicate match, veal dishes prepared with morel mushrooms bring out the wine's floral, spiced character.
Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022: A Pinot Noir Rooted in Gevrey-Chambertin's Limestone Soils
The Estate
Domaine Pierre Girardin was founded in 2016 in Meursault, at the heart of Burgundy, by Pierre-Vincent Girardin, a thirteenth-generation winegrower whose family long cultivated prime sites in the Côte de Beaune. Today led by Pierre Girardin himself, the estate has grown from its original holdings to encompass plots across the Côte de Beaune, the Côte de Nuits and the Jura. Guided by organic farming principles and a low-intervention approach in the cellar, the domaine focuses on precise, terroir-driven chardonnay and pinot noir.
The Vineyard
The grapes come from the Griotte-Chambertin climat, one of the smallest and most confidential grand crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, set on a moderately sloping, east-facing section of the hillside between the grand crus of Chapelle-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. The soil, locally known as "crais," consists of stony limestone over hard bedrock, topped with brown earth containing loam and gravelly scree on the upper slope, and clay-limestone further down. This combination allows pinot noir to reach slow, complete ripeness on a site whose total surface area remains extremely limited.
Winemaking and aging
As with the other red cuvées of the domaine, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 is vinified with a non-interventionist approach: the grapes are pressed gently, punching down is kept to a minimum, and the wine is aged in previously used barrels so as not to mask the fruit with new oak. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its natural texture and the pure expression of the pinot noir.
Grape Varieties
This grand cru is produced entirely from pinot noir, the only grape variety authorized within the Griotte-Chambertin appellation.
