Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Romanée" 2020 by Pierre Girardin
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Romanée": A Chardonnay Shaped by the Pierre Girardin Estate
The Estate
Founded in 2016 in Meursault, at the heart of Burgundy, the Pierre Girardin estate was established by Pierre-Vincent Girardin, the thirteenth generation of a winegrowing family whose father, Vincent Girardin, built a renowned Burgundian estate and merchant house. Starting from roughly four hectares, Pierre-Vincent released his first vintage in 2017 and has since grown the estate to about 13 hectares across Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and other prestigious appellations. Today, Pierre Girardin personally oversees the property, favoring organic-leaning viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking to express the purity of each terroir.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this wine come from La Romanée, a premier cru climat located on the slope of Chassagne-Montrachet and dedicated to chardonnay. The vineyard rests on clay-limestone soils with a notably high proportion of white marl, a geological feature that favors freshness, minerality and a saline character while keeping the wine's lines precise despite its density.
Winemaking and aging
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Romanée" 2020 is crafted following the minimal-intervention winemaking philosophy applied throughout the Pierre Girardin estate, an approach designed to preserve the purity and natural character of this chardonnay terroir.
Grape Varieties
This wine is made from 100 % chardonnay, the only grape variety permitted in the white wines of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation.
