Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Bourgogne Chardonnay 2023 from Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils
Tasting
Color
Given the style of young Chardonnay from this part of the Côte de Beaune, this Bourgogne Chardonnay can be expected to show a pale to bright straw-yellow hue, likely with subtle lemon tints.
Nose
The nose opens on a vivid citrus character, with lemon zest notes taking the lead and lending the wine a lively, energetic edge. This freshness is a hallmark of the fruit sourced from Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, offering a pure and direct aromatic expression.
Palate
On the palate, this wine from Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils reveals a concentration above what is typically expected from a regional Bourgogne, carried by bright citrus freshness and a delicious sense of energy. The texture is generous, striking a balance between the richness inherited from Meursault and the tension drawn from Puligny-Montrachet.
Food and wine pairings
This Bourgogne Chardonnay pairs naturally with delicate white fish such as cod, sea bass, or sole, prepared simply with a light citrus touch. It also complements shellfish like shrimp, langoustine, or lobster, whether grilled or served with a light cream sauce. Roasted poultry with herb-infused jus, as well as mild, young soft-ripened cheeses, make for pleasant companions to this wine.
The Estate
Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils was founded in 1971 in Meursault, in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, following the split of the family vineyard between Michel Bouzereau and his brother. The estate, whose roots trace back seven generations in the village, is today led by Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau, who has overseen the property since the late 1990s. Known for its vineyard-first philosophy and organic viticulture, the domaine has built a strong reputation for the precision of its white Chardonnay wines.
The Vineyard
This Bourgogne Chardonnay is sourced from plots located around Meursault, notably Magny and Sous la Velle, as well as Champs Perriers in Puligny-Montrachet, all resting on clay-limestone soils typical of the Côte de Beaune. The vines used for this blend were planted in 1957, 1970, 1990, and 1995, bringing together different ages and giving the wine added depth and concentration.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for this Bourgogne Chardonnay 2023 are hand-harvested and gently pressed, with fermentation carried out using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for about one year in 228-liter barrels and 400-liter casks, with 10 to 15% new oak, followed by two additional months in tank before bottling, without fining or filtration and with minimal use of sulfur.
Grape Varieties
100% chardonnay.
