Tasting
Color
The wine shows a medium ruby hue with bright, translucent reflections, typical of Volnay's refined pinot noir.
Nose
The nose reveals aromas of ripe red and dark berries, enhanced by notes of pepper, black tea and bay leaf, with a mineral edge that reflects the stony Taillepieds terroir.
Palate
The palate is medium-bodied, driven by a firm yet fine-grained tannic structure. The finish is persistent, with a lively energy and spicy, mineral nuances that bring definition and length.
Food and wine pairings
This Volnay pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, delicate meats such as veal with mushrooms, and refined vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto.
Serving and cellaring
Volnay 1er Cru "Taillepieds" 2022 can be enjoyed in its youthful, vibrant phase while also offering excellent aging potential. It should evolve gracefully in the cellar for several years. Serve at 16–17 °C, ideally after a short decanting to allow the wine to open fully.
Other characteristics
The alcohol level is 13%. The domaine is certified organic, farmed organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2005.
A benchmark Volnay from Domaine de Montille
The Estate
Located in Burgundy, the estate dates back to the 1730s and took its current name in 1863. Today, Étienne de Montille heads this historic family property. The vineyard covers 37 hectares spread across prestigious terroirs. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, the estate produces classical, structured wines that faithfully reflect their origin. The recent unification of all wines under the Domaine de Montille label has strengthened the identity and coherence of this benchmark estate, renowned for its high standards and the purity of its cuvées.
The Vineyard
The Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds climat lies mid-slope with a south-east exposure. This 1.51-hectare terroir is characterized by light brown clay soils scattered with abundant small stones. It is known for giving wines a pronounced mineral character, precision, firmness and great elegance.
The Vintage
The 2022 growing season in Burgundy was marked by warm, sunny conditions and a generally dry climate, leading to excellent ripeness and healthy fruit. After the low yields of 2021, 2022 saw a return to more generous harvest levels. In Volnay, these conditions produced reds with ripe tannins, concentrated fruit and a supple texture, while the higher, well-drained sites such as Taillepieds retained good balance and energy despite the warmth of the year.
Winemaking and aging
The 2022 vintage is vinified with a proportion of whole clusters, a signature approach at Domaine de Montille that brings aromatic complexity, spice and structural finesse. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, including a carefully judged share of new oak, which supports the wine's framework without masking the classical, lifted expression of the Taillepieds terroir.
