Robert Parker

Monica Larner

The Cordero di Montezemolo 2021 Barolo Monfalletto comes from various vineyards near the winery in La Morra. This wine offers a plump, slightly ripe fruit profile with black cherry, damson plum and menthol. It remains genuine and pretty throughout. It doesn't show the exacting depth of the top wines, but this well-priced Barolo delivers good cheer in a more accessible style. This is a release of 54,000 bottles.

Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

This is supple and spicy, its cherry, raspberry and rose flavors framed by a light touch of oak. Balanced and elegant, with refined tannins. Fine length. Best from 2028 through 2043. 4,600 cases made, 2,100 cases imported.

Decanter

An abundant production of over 50,000 bottles, the estate’s flagship wine comes from 14ha that stretch across Gattera, spilling into the neighbouring MGA of Bricco Manescotto. Forthcoming in crushed raspberry and cherry, it displays its signature truffle notes along with touches of leather. The palate is tighter than the nose suggests: clean and energetic, it flaunts sumptuous red fruit wrapped in long, fine tannins. With bouncy, bright acidity, this is more about freshness and drinkability than sheer ageworthy depth.

James Suckling

An intense, deep, vibrant wine full of spicy aromas of mint, licorice, balsamic, eucalyptus, dried violets and prunes. The attack is supple and dense, with a full body, refreshing acidity and firm tannins that are velvety and refined. Still austere on the finish, with the potential for aging. Try from 2027.

Wine Enthusiast

Jeff Porter

Dark cherries and ripe forest fruits emerge with brooding intensity, showing Monfalletto's robust personality. The wine flexes its muscles across the palate, where dusty tannins build steadily before exploding on the finish, demonstrating a powerful yet controlled expression of Barolo's classic structure. Drink from 2027

The richness and refinement of a rich, suave Piedmont wine

The estate

Located in the village of La Morra, the Cordero di Montezemolo estate is an emblematic reference in the Langhe winegrowing area, in northern Piedmont, Italy.

The vineyard

Cordero di Montezemolo oversees nearly 51 hectares of vineyards planted on exceptional Italian terroirs in Piedmont. The estate’s wines are recognized beyond its borders for their complexity, power, and great aging potential.

The wine

Monfalletto by Cordero di Montezemolo is crafted from a selection of multiple vineyards in the Barolo appellation. Situated between 250 and 300 meters in altitude and facing southwest to southeast, this terroir of more than 13 hectares, with vines roughly 10 to 50 years old, is rooted in soils rich in magnesium and manganese, composed of silt, clay, and sand.

Winemaking and aging

Hand-harvested from late September to early October depending on the vintage. Fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks for about 10 days. Racking followed by malolactic fermentation in French and Slavonian oak barrels of various sizes. Aged 19 to 22 months in barrels depending on the lot. Blended, then given an additional year of bottle aging before release.
