Description
The elegance and balance of a red Pessac-Léognan from Château Haut-Bailly
The estate
With vineyard land whose quality for growing vines was recognized in local archives as early as 1461, Château Haut-Bailly enjoys a prestigious heritage. Awarded Cru Classé des Graves status in 1953, Château Haut-Bailly began a new chapter in its history when it was acquired by Robert G. Wilmers in 1998. A lover of Bordeaux and its wines, this great patron and admirer of French culture worked alongside his wife to preserve the historic heritage of Château Haut-Bailly while bringing an innovative, modern vision to raise the estate to the very highest level, until his death in December 2017. The estate's Managing Director, Véronique Sanders, together with Technical Director Gabriel Vialard, runs this iconic Cru Classé in the Pessac-Léognan appellation with talent and passion.
The vineyard
Set atop a gravel knoll in the Graves, Château Haut-Bailly tends 30 hectares of vines planted on gravel, clay and sand soils. The gentle slopes of the knoll ensure excellent drainage.
The vintage
Winter and spring were marked by heavy rainfall. Although budbreak was particularly early, frost on the nights of March 25 and 26 affected parts of the vineyard. Milder temperatures at the end of April encouraged rapid vine growth. The heavy rainfall in early May was gradually offset by warm, dry conditions, allowing flowering to take place two weeks ahead of schedule. The first two weeks of June were overcast and conducive to mildew. Bunch closure was completed around June 15, nearly three weeks early. From June 20, a hot summer set in, historically dry in July and early August, with spikes of intense heat. Thanks to its deep roots, the vineyard withstood the drought. The early veraison was uneven. Stormy spells from August 11 to 13 brought cooler temperatures, helped veraison to progress more evenly and relieved water stress in the young vines. The grapes were harvested fully ripe, fruity, rich in sugar and highly concentrated. Yields were comparable to those of 2010.
Blend
Château Haut-Bailly 2020 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (52%), Merlot (42%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (3%).
The 2020 is the first vintage to have been made in the estate's new winery. Initiated in 2017 by Robert Wilmers shortly before his death, construction of this majestic, state-of-the-art cellar was launched in 2018 by his son, Chris Wilmers, Chairman of the estate's Supervisory Board. Designed by architect Daniel Romeo, this supremely elegant building blends seamlessly into its surroundings and provides an outstanding facility for winemaking of great precision.
