Description
A strong, sophisticated White Burgundy
A historic estate in the Chassagne-Montrachet area of Burgundy, Chateau de la Maltroye today expands over 13 hectares planted to vine in Chassagne and 2 hectares in Santenay. Since taking control of the estate in 1993, Jean-Pierre Cournut has managed the vineyards with sustainable farming methods, purposefully limiting yields in order to favor quality over quantity. The Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru "La Dent de Chien" by Chateau de la Maltroye is a White Burgundy wine made with 100% Chardonnay. The fruit was grown in a Premier Cru plot named "La Dent de Chien," probably the most sought-after and rare in all of Chassagne-Montrachet, named after the "Dog Tooth"-shaped limestone rock overlooking the vines. Chateau de la Maltroye cultivates a tiny 65-are plot in this very special premier cru, populated by very old vines, which were planted in 1935. The yields are naturally very low, due to the age of the vines. The soils here are of thin, light brown earth, with a high percentage of limestone, and very stony.
On the nose, the Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru "La Dent de Chien" 2014 by Chateau de la Maltroye reveals a wonderful strength and sophistication through a complex bouquet of white flowers, mint, Granny Smith apple, citrus zest, and polished pebbles. This rare Premier Cru Burgundy offers a powerful attack, followed by a pure expression of terroir on the palate. The finish is phenomenal, long and intensely mineral. A fantastic wine to drink now or keep 10 years.
