The richness and refinement of a second wine from Saint-Émilion

The property

Founded in 1782, Château Angélus is an emblematic estate of Bordeaux, located in Saint-Émilion. Spanning 32 hectares, it has been managed by the de Boüard family for 8 generations. The vineyard, mainly planted with cabernet franc and merlot, benefits from a unique clay-limestone terroir on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion. The name "Angélus" comes from the bells of the neighboring churches, symbolizing the heritage and identity of the estate.

The vineyard

Located on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion, on the "foot of the slope", the vineyard of Château Angélus flourishes on a particularly suitable clay-limestone terroir for the expression of Bordeaux grape varieties. The vines are on average 39 years old.

The wine

Carillon d'Angelus comes from specific plots covering 21 dedicated hectares, spread over different terroirs of Saint-Émilion. These vines are planted on three complementary types of soil: cold and late clays, warmer clay-sandy-limestone soils, and well-drained and early terrains. This diversity of terroirs contributes to the complexity and richness of the wine.

The vintage

After a mild and wet winter, the spring was particularly rainy, except for a brief respite during flowering. Fortunately, the months of July and August, hot and dry, favored the maturation of the grapes, bringing them aromatic richness and concentration. Despite a more unstable September, the harvest was able to take place under good conditions, with a satisfactory harvest and beautiful grapes at the end.

Vinification and aging

Vinification takes place in inverted conical stainless steel vats, with filling and extraction by gravity. A pre-fermentation maceration at 8°C precedes the alcoholic fermentation, the temperature of which can reach 28°C. This is followed by a post-fermentation maceration between 28 and 30°C for 1 to 3 weeks. The barreling is carried out 50% after racking and 50% after malolactic fermentation. Aging continues for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels with medium heat, 60% new and 40% of one wine.

Blend

Merlot (90%) and cabernet franc (10%).
