Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2022 Barbaresco is a polished, easygoing wine that offers plenty of immediacy and overall appeal. Sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, incense, tobacco and orange peel all meld together, framed by soft, silky tannins. This is a fine effort.

Audrey Frick

A translucent medium ruby hue, the 2022 Barbaresco is zesty and spicy on the nose with forward notes of anise, orange zest, fresh mint, cranberry, and dried earth. The palate shows the fruity and sunny side of the vintage, and it’s medium-framed and light on its feet, with a clean and easygoing feel. It’s not the most profound wine, but it offers a lot of immediate appeal. Drink 2025-2032.

Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Bright and lively, this red evokes cherry, strawberry, floral, menthol and licorice flavors. A light dusting of tannins lines the finish. Should be approachable in a few years. Best from 2028 through 2040. 800 cases imported.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the 2022 Barbaresco from Antinori - Prunotto

Tasting

Appearance

The wine reveals an intense garnet-red color with orange highlights, typical of Nebbiolo.

Nose

The nose is fragrant and complex, offering aromas of wild red fruits and berries intertwined with notes of undergrowth and aromatic herbs. Floral and spicy impressions unfold, accompanied by nuances of sweet tobacco, licorice, black pepper, and delicate balsamic touches.

Palate

On the palate, this wine charms with its elegance and remarkable balance. The velvety texture reveals a refined tannic structure and exceptional concentration. The whole is harmonious, with a generous body without heaviness, leading to a long and persistent finish with hints of cherry, spices, and subtle mineral notes.

Food and wine pairings

This Barbaresco pairs perfectly with mushroom or cheese risottos, white meats in cream sauce, brasato prepared with red wine, as well as aged Piedmontese cheeses such as Grana Padana, Toma, or Fontina. It also matches well with roasted poultry or grilled lamb dishes.

Serving and cellaring

This 2022 Barbaresco can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2032. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C.

An elegant and balanced Barbaresco from Piedmont

The estate

Founded in 1904 as a cooperative, the company was taken over in 1922 by Alfredo Prunotto and his wife Luigina, who gave it their name. In 1956, Beppe Colla and his brother Tino acquired the estate and were pioneers of single-vineyard vinification as early as 1961. The Antinori family took control of production in 1994, under the impetus of Albiera Antinori. Today, the estate covers 74 hectares between Langhe and Monferrato. Located in Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, Antinori - Prunotto stands midway between Barbaresco and Barolo, producing exceptional wines that express the unique identity of this prestigious Piedmontese terroir.

The vineyard

The grapes for this Barbaresco come from vines located in the communes of Treiso and Neive, at the heart of the appellation of the same name. The estate devotes 5.2 hectares to the production of Barbaresco. The soils are mainly composed of limestone and clay, calcareous marls that give the wine its characteristic elegance and finesse. These terroirs benefit from favorable exposures that allow optimal ripening of Nebbiolo.

The vintage

The 2022 vintage in Piedmont was marked by generally warm and dry conditions until mid-May, followed by abundant rainfall particularly intense in the Alba region. From July onward, temperatures returned to seasonal averages with several summer storms. These factors reduced yields without compromising the quality or ripeness of the grapes. Harvesting took place from September 22 to October 4, confirming an early harvest typical of this vintage.

Vinification and aging

The carefully selected grapes were destemmed and crushed upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation took place over a period of about 10 days at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Skin maceration lasted around 8 days at controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation was completed before the end of winter. The 2022 Barbaresco was then aged for approximately one year in oak barrels of different capacities, formats chosen to reveal the potential of each parcel.
