A Voluptuous and Fruit Forward Pinot Noir
Domaine Meo-Camuzet began producing top quality Burgundy wines in 1983, however their history in the Cote d’Or dates back much further. Etienne Camuzet purchased 20 hectares of some of the best plots in Burgundy, renting this land out to sharecroppers to maintain. The estate land was passed down through three generations: Etienne’s daughter, her nephew Jean Meo and then finally to Jean’s son Jean-Nicolas, who created the Domaine in 1981.
Jean-Nicolas received the land from his father after graduating from business and oenology school and forged his own path for the family business. Jean-Nicolas worked alongside sharecroppers who maintained their family land for over 40 years and learned from the very best. Today, Meo-Camuzet produces six Grand Crus alongside 10 Premier Crus and several village wines with one goal in mind: purity. The Domaine looks to maintain balance and pure expressions of the diverse terroir within Burgundy.
Vosne Romanee, located in the Cote de Nuit, is known for its lively Pinot Noir. Typically wines from this area balanced with lovely structure, elegance and longevity. Notes of tart red fruit dominate with hints of undergrowth, licorice and smoke. Les Chaumes is a larger Premier Crus site at the southern end of Vosne Romanee. Strictly Pinot Noir, these vines are planted on an Eastern facing aspect in deep limestone marl soil creating great acidity and a touch of minerality to add to the supple fruit forward palate.
The Meo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanee 1er cru Les Chaumes 2017 is charming and elegant. It is aromatic, bursting with notes of cherry, raspberry and roses, leading to a similar layered palate. Flavors of fresh red fruit are enhanced by minerality and a touch of bay leaf. The wine is balanced, with firm tannins and a vibrant, long finish. Allow this wine to age for a few years for the complexity and nuances shine through.
