Tasting Notes and Serving Tips for Pommard 1er Cru "Epenots" 2017 by Louis Latour
Tasting
Color
This Pommard 1er Cru "Epenots" 2017 displays a beautiful garnet hue, a deep and vibrant color that reflects the ripeness of the pinot noir grapes and the careful extraction carried out during vinification.
Nose
The nose opens on a complex bouquet combining blackberry, coffee and pepper, with the dark fruit character enriched by subtle roasted and spicy nuances brought by the oak aging.
Palate
The palate is full and generous, revealing cherry and cherry-pit aromas that extend into a notably sappy, lingering finish. The wine shows a medium to full body with ripe, well-integrated tannins that give it both richness and balance.
Food and wine pairings
Pommard 1er Cru "Epenots" 2017 pairs beautifully with duck confit and braised beef dishes such as a classic beef bourguignon. It also shows great affinity with flavorful soft-rind cheeses, making it a versatile companion for hearty, savory meals built around rich meats and robust cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
Louis Latour recommends serving Pommard 1er Cru "Epenots" 2017 at a temperature of 15 to 17°C. According to the estate, this wine has a cellaring potential of 7 to 10 years, with its peak expected around 2030.
A Structured Pommard Shaped by the Epenots Terroir
The Estate
Maison Louis Latour is a family-run business based in Aloxe-Corton, in the heart of Burgundy, and recognized as one of the longest continuously family-owned wine companies in the region, belonging to the Hénokiens association of multi-generational enterprises. The house owns 48 hectares of vineyards in Burgundy, including 27 hectares of grand cru sites, making it one of the largest single holders of grand cru vineyards in the region. Louis Latour is also notable for operating its own in-house cooperage and for its long-standing commitment to sustainable viticulture.
The Vineyard
Pommard sits on the Côte de Beaune, nestled between the town of Beaune and the village of Volnay. The vines used for this Pommard 1er Cru "Epenots" are approximately 30 years old, grown on clay-limestone subsoil typical of the appellation, with an average yield of around 40 hectoliters per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, in keeping with the estate's attention to fruit quality and vineyard precision.
Winemaking and aging
Pommard 1er Cru "Epenots" 2017 undergoes traditional fermentation in open vats, followed by a complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in oak barrels, 35% of which are new, crafted in medium toast French oak from Louis Latour's own cooperage.
Grape Varieties
100% pinot noir.
