Description

A Brilliantly Fragrant Pinot Noir from Nuits-Saint-Georges

The history of Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier can be traced back to the 1880's when Francois Mugnier, taking advantage of the plumetting prices of vineyards due to the phylloxera epidemic, began to purchase parcels in Chambolle in Burgundy, followed by the Chateau de Chambolle-Musigny. The historic "Clos de Marechale" vineyard was purchased in 1902, bringing the estate's property to 24 hectares in total. Over the past century, the estate has been passed down through the family to Jacques-Frederic who leased the estate to Domaine Faiveley for 25 years. In 2004, the lease ended and the parcel returned to Domaine Mugnier, tripling the size of the estate overnight. This 9-hectare vineyard is the largest monopole in the Cote d’Or, home to vines that are around 45 years old. The estate is currently managed by Frederic Mugnier, 5th generation of the family on the property and an engineer by trade, who considers scientific, ethical and aesthetic aspects in choosing how to manage his family vineyard. The vines are cultivated without the use of industrial fertilizers or herbicides, though Frederic is not officially a supporter of organic or biodynamic viticulture. The Nuits-St Georges "Clos de la Marechale" 2015 by Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier is completely destemmed after the harvest and bottled after their second winter in barrel without being fined or filtered. This Burgundy wine is made with only 20-25% new oak, offering a radiant expression of the Musigny terroir.

At the tasting, the Nuits-St Georges "Clos de la Marechale" 2015 by Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier seduces with its pale color in the glass. The bouquet of this 100% Pinot Noir wine is brilliantly fragrant, revealing a floral character, with hints of iris and white lilac, along with touches of wild raspberry. The attack is frank without being too austere, and the wine unfolds rough tannins in its youth, typical of wines from the central area of Nuits-St Georges. This is a wine that should be aged a good 5-10 years in order for it to fully reveal its personality.
