Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2022 Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat
Tasting
Color
This wine shows a deep ruby red color with a bright, dense hue, consistent with a grand cru pinot noir aged in oak barrels with a substantial share of new wood.
Nose
The nose opens on ripe red berry aromas, intertwined with notes of incense and spice, complemented by hints of dried flowers and a subtle sweet, earthy undertone.
Palate
The palate is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, carried by a lively, youthfully taut energy that suggests further development with time in the cellar.
Food and wine pairings
This Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru pairs wonderfully with roasted red meats, feathered game birds, and dishes built around mushrooms or truffles. It also matches beautifully with richly sauced poultry preparations, where the depth of the wine echoes the savory character of the dish.
Serving and cellaring
The Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2022 is best served at a temperature of around 61–64°F (16–18°C). Decanting an hour or two before serving is recommended to allow its aromatic profile to fully unfold.
A Structured, Terroir-Driven Red Burgundy from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat's Clos de Vougeot
The Estate
Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat was officially founded in 1962 by Alain Hudelot, bringing together vineyard holdings inherited from the Hudelot family of Chambolle-Musigny and the Noëllat family of Vosne-Romanée. Today, the estate farms close to ten hectares across four villages of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, covering around fifteen appellations, from village wines to grand crus such as Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and Clos de Vougeot. Since 2008, the property has been run by Charles van Canneyt, Alain Hudelot's grandson, who favors gentle, low-intervention winemaking that lets each terroir speak for itself.
The Vineyard
The Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru parcel farmed by Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat covers 0.69 hectare within this historic walled vineyard in Vougeot, originally laid out by Cistercian monks centuries ago. The vines, with an average age of around sixty years, grow on east-facing slopes over clay-limestone subsoil, benefiting from gentle morning sun while avoiding excessive afternoon heat. Across its holdings, the estate follows an environmentally mindful approach, avoiding herbicides and favoring practices that support soil life and vine balance.
The Vintage
The 2022 growing season in Burgundy was marked by warm conditions that allowed the pinot noir grapes to reach full ripeness, while cooler nights helped preserve freshness and natural acidity in the fruit. This balance between warmth and freshness resulted in wines combining richness of fruit with a lively, youthful tension.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2022 were hand-harvested and hand-sorted, then destemmed to about 80 percent before a gentle fermentation relying solely on indigenous yeasts, accompanied by punching down of the cap during the process. The wine was neither fined nor filtered, preserving its full texture and aromatic depth, and was aged for sixteen months in oak barrels, half of them new.
Grape Varieties
This wine is produced from 100 % pinot noir, the sole grape variety grown across Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat's vineyards to express the full character of its Burgundian terroirs.
